Black Lives Matter Murals

The Black Lives Matter murals around Carrboro highlight and advocate for values that are important to Carrboro. They express our community’s acknowledgment of and opposition to systemic and institutional racism.

The Town of Carrboro completed a Black Lives Matter mural on Dec. 18, 2020, at Communityworx, 125 W. Main St. The mural faces West Main Street at the intersection of Jones Ferry Road.

The Carrboro Town Council selected artist Tyrone Small and a young artist team, as well as the mural rendering, at its Nov. 17, 20202, meeting. The Council supported recommendations from the Arts Committee in the selection process.

"The BLM mural done by myself and the students was a testament to what we can all do as a people if we can just put our differences aside and come together to create something beautiful and lasting forever," Mr. Small said.

Mr. Small led the student artist team of Ash Granda-Bondurant, Carina Rockart, Theo Preston and Cyani Jacobs. The team was selected from a pool of 17 applicants, who were asked to submit work samples and mural proposals.

Century Center

The Town of Carrboro installed a Black Lives Matter mural on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at the Carrboro Century Center, 100 N. Greensboro St.

Erbriyon Barrett, who was selected through a competitive application process, painted the mural on the building’s side facing E. Main Street. Mr. Barrett noted "a lot of positive energy" expressed by passersby during his work.

The Century Center is home to the Carrboro Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources Department, the Carrboro Cybrary, and the Carrboro Police Department. The mural was approved by the Town Council on Oct. 27, 2020.
